9,500 solar panels are generating electricity on seven roofs within the Embraport logistics complex. The system has been fully operational for a few weeks now. The KYBURZ company building forms part of the largest solar power plant in the canton of Zurich.

The modules on the seven roofs will generate approximately 4 GWh of electricity per year. According to the plant operator EKZ, this is enough to supply 900 four-person households. However, the clean electricity is to be consumed locally wherever possible. For KYBURZ, this means:

Half of the annual production from its own roof is sufficient to cover its entire annual electricity requirement.

As there is often a time lag between electricity consumption and solar production, the Zurich Cantonal Electricity Works (EKZ) plans to install a large-scale battery with a capacity of 2 MWh at Embraport. Zürcher Freilager AG, as the site owner and operator, sees the installations as a locational advantage: many companies are showing interest in the sustainable logistics centre.
